The 22 Apostle Islands lie off Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula, on the south shore of Lake Superior. All but Madeline Island are a part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, which also includes a 12-mile stretch of mainland. The islands are rich in human history, and natural splendor both grand and intimate. The diverse forests, bogs, and shoreline support over 800 plant species, which in turn provide habitat for an equally diverse fauna. Reaching the islands by sea kayak, Craig Blacklock brought his camera through the labyrinths of sea caves, along pristine beaches, deep into flower-filled bogs, and up the spiral staircases of lighthouses. Most images in this collection were photographed with a high-resolution digital camera. Many of the photographs were made from several captures, each at a different focus point or different exposure. This process is similar to how human vision and memory create and store images, and the resulting blended images depict the Apostle Islands more accurately than photographs made with a single capture. Never before has the beauty of the Apostles been so spectacularly displayed.
